Torch Leadership Assessment Domains Overview

At Torch, we believe true leadership is broader than any single theory. Great leaders have traits and behaviors found in many different theories of leadership, and the Torch 360 Leadership Assessment was built upon this dynamic understanding. We analyzed hundred of leadership traits, theories, and strategies to create a forward-thinking assessment that accurately reflects the diverse needs of leaders and organizations today. 


Based on our findings, the Torch 360 uses three categories, called leadership domains, to assess an individual's effectiveness and potential. Learn more about the Personal, Interpersonal, and Team leadership domains and the subdomains they include.


Leadership Assessment Domains


NOTE: This article outlines the standard Torch 360 leadership domains. Your organization may have chosen to create its own 360 assessment with customized domains and questions.


Personal

The Personal leadership domain includes the Authenticity, Reliability, and Balance subdomains.

Authenticity

An authentic leader stays true to their personal values across a wide range of situations. These leaders consider others’ opinions but always incorporate their own sense of self into their choices and decisions.

Sample assessment sentence: My actions reflect my core values.

Reliability

A reliable leader likes to lead by example when it comes to fulfilling commitments and meeting deadlines. These leaders deliver quality work on schedule.

Sample assessment sentence: I follow through on my promises and commitments.

Balance

A balanced leader is able to effectively balance the demands of their professional and private lives while taking care of their basic needs. Balanced leaders show greater resilience at work and are at a lower risk of burnout.

Sample assessment sentence: I maintain a healthy work/life balance.


Interpersonal

The Interpersonal leadership domain includes the Presence, Perceptiveness, Receptiveness, and Compassion subdomains.

Presence

A present leader pays close attention to their colleagues and actively listens when someone is speaking. They foster a sense of attention and safety that helps their teams to feel heard and valued.

Sample assessment statement: I consistently give my full attention to the person or topic at hand.

Perceptiveness

A perceptive leader is aware of the thoughts and feelings of those around them. They react and take action in a helpful way when colleagues are uncomfortable, stressed or overwhelmed.

Sample assessment statement: I notice when a colleague is upset, even if they don't say anything.

Receptiveness

A receptive leader graciously accepts feedback and differing opinions. When leaders are approachable and receptive, they foster an open environment and signal a willingness to consider new perspectives. They value the perspectives of others as they work towards personal improvement.

Sample assessment statement: I address constructive feedback by changing my behavior for the better.

Compassion

A compassionate leader internalizes the emotional states of their colleagues, and actively reaches out and offers help when appropriate. They care about their colleagues as complete people, which builds trust and a sense of camaraderie.

Sample assessment sentence: My heart goes out to colleagues who are unhappy.


Team

The Team leadership domain includes the Structure and Cultivation subdomains.

NOTE: If domains related to managing a team are not relevant to you, your organization may have chosen not to include the following subdomains in your 360 assessment.

Structure

A structured leader ensures everyone knows the broader team goals and what is expected of each individual. Structured leaders provide specific goals and timelines to keep everyone on the same page. This allows for accountability on both the individual and team levels.

Sample assessment statement: I communicate our team's mission clearly.

Cultivation

A cultivating leader takes an interest in their colleagues’ personal development. They help both teams and individuals push past their comfort zones to grow and achieve their professional goals. Cultivation leads to both individual and organizational growth.

Sample assessment statement: I help my team members reach their full potential.
