Torch Coaching Principles

We believe leadership isn't about titles or roles, but rather mindsets and behaviors. Anyone who takes responsibility for the success of those around them is a leader. Being a leader requires a mastery of flexibility, resilience, self-awareness, and the ability to implement growth and forge trusted relationships.

While every coach will have their own style, methods, and tools, all Torch coaches use the following Torch Coaching Principles to guide you through your coaching engagement:

  • Fuel for Rapid Growth - A Torch coach will help you quickly hone in on areas for improvement, and set you up for quick wins to build momentum and motivation, which lead to big changes.
  • Short-Term Impactful Goals - A Torch coach will meet you where you are and shape short-term strategic goals that meaningfully impact your current reality.
  • Action & Experiential Learning - A Torch coach will ground coaching in current situations within your organization's context and gear engagements toward action, application, and experience to maximize learning.
  • Strengths-Based Approach - A Torch coach will encourage you to draw on your natural talents and abilities to learn new skills, exceed your goals, and close developmental gaps.

The Coach's Role

A coach's job, simply put, is to meet you where you are and to help you get to where you want to go. Come as you are! Whether this is your first or tenth coaching engagement, getting started is the most important step.

Your coach is a strategic thought partner who facilitates learning, change, and growth by:

  • Increasing your situational and relational awareness
  • Clarifying your goals
  • Expanding your perspective
  • Supporting you in new actions and behaviors
  • Providing accountability

The coach's job is to help you unlock your potential. A Torch coach may have a similar professional background and domain expertise, but they're not there to give advice or direction from their own experience.

NOTE: A common misconception is that a leadership coach is like a sports coach: someone who has played that same game before and tells you exactly what to do.

Torch Matching Process

Our science-backed approach uses sophisticated algorithms to suggest matches to our human Match Team, who then leverages their experience to narrow the field to three coaches.

We start by aligning time zones between you and your potential coaches. Next we consider your selected focus skill areas (for example, executive presence, communication, and personal brand). With alignment on focus skills, the best indicator of a successful coaching match is behavioral traits and personality styles. This is where the human touch of our Match Team is especially important, expertly interpreting your sliding scale preferences for a coach with a personality and coaching style that is more facilitative or advisory, result-oriented or well-being-oriented, and supporting or challenging.

After the Match Team narrows down to three coach options, the final choice is up to you.
